Started reading this in depth, sorry if this comes out as a clusterfuck as I'm doing this as I go. Issue 1 doesn't seem to bad, but now I'm at Issue 2 and holy shit SFP's literally a bloodthirsty psychopath. She says she loves fighting more than anything and the only reason she stopped is because she doesn't think she's making the world any better. This is a pretty intriguing angle, especially if professor guy can prove that she's going to become a tyrant, but I'll need to keep reading.
The mind-reading pseudovillain is giving me the heeby-jeebies. "I don't really identify as a person, but I try really hard to do good things." *shudders* If there's anyone who's going to convince SFP to go full tyrant, it's going to be him.
Issue 3, Lizardgirl's an interesting story. Starts off as an antihero, has a crisis of confidence after SFP stops superheroing, travels around the world meeting people, then decides, "Hey, I've got regenerative powers, I can be a universal organ donor FOREVER." There's definitely some interesting ideas in here. Too bad the Westboro Baptist Church of superheroes decides to show up. Funny thing, someone actually points out that if she loved that Occupy protest from the beginning so much, she should allow this protest as well. And some badguy burns her to death... I think this ties into what pseduo-badguy was saying earlier about superheroes who try to fix the world are being killed off. And holy shit, SFP is PISSED. And she even has the protesters cowering before her.
And holy shit, she's going on about how people let her get away with this because she's not scary looking. I don't know about you, but I think it has more to do with the fact that nobody can stop her. No wonder professor guy thinks she's a tyrant.
Issue 4, Dad has this weird moment where he says you don't HAVE to dress up like a fairy and she's all but I want to be a fairy. This scene has nothing to do with what they're talking about, it just comes out of nowhere and he's acting so apologetic. Yikes. Also "Nobody in the world is normal," Technically wrong. I hear this all the time from people who don't understand what normal means. It mean the population can be evenly distributed along a bell curve. Not everyone is the same, but there's a definitive pattern where the majority of people will fall under. For example, it's normal to be straight because ~95% of the population is straight. There is no value judgement attached to that, it's a simple statement of fact. Anyways, she discovers her superpowers, blah blah blah. Mexican kid convinces her to be a hero.
Oh no, Dad's got cancer... Wait, hold on. Didn't we establish that lizardgirl can replace organs? Why not just have her grow him a new pancreas? Assuming the cancer hasn't metasticized, it should work. Anyway, her sister turns out is an anti-super sympathizer. But they make up and stuff.
Issue 5, Ah. This must be the murder-rape arc I heard about. This will be fun. And by fun I mean deeply unpleasant. But ok, let's play along. So we are to assume that this rapists are in fact rapists because mysterious shadow-warp thing says so. Or rather, it's egging this girl on with promises of revenge. Honestly, even if she were being honest about her own rape, this could easily spiral out of control if she started targeting other people. Imagine if she were involved with the UVA incident?
Anyways, I'm getting the impression that with the constant use of the word "biodynamic" we're doing the whole XMan "mutant = gay" thing.
Ahaha, now we're getting into it. So a guy is escorting a drunk girl away from a part, and SFP just FLIPS. So, two issues here. 1. If she suspected that bro-dude was going to rape the girl, she had other options available than strangle the guy. 2. She's accusing everyone of being complicit with rapists for not immediately going after the guy, despite the fact that they're understandable freaked out over the situation. Even if what he was doing was shady, you can't expect people at a riotous party to be 100% aware of everything going around them. The lack of information is likely the reason why they're upset. Again, she could have handled the situation a lot better.
Okay, let's see how far the rabbithole goes. Now we're getting to the moralizing. Roomates are saying drunk girl needs to practice safe drinking like every responsible adult on the planet. SFP calls it victim blaming. And whaddayaknow, she's a hypocrite too. SFP says she doesn't drink for safety reasons, which I assume means she doesn't want to lose control when drunk... which is EXACTLY the same reason why you don't drink and drive, or get drunk at a party.
Ah, now the Judge is being murdered too, but he was a wifebeater, so he deserves it.
SFP makes the monstrous error of assuming batboy has a mom and dad. HEATHEN! HETERONORMATIVE SCUM! BURN THE HERETIC!!!!
Holy shit the comic actually addresses the idea that superheroes going after ordinary people might be a nightmare for due process! How's this going to be ignored in the forthcoming plot?
Aha, so because SFP left the superhero team in a huff and put undue pressure on her teammates, Mary's the one who turns into the psycho killer vigilante. So there's no excuses here of the killer being some all-knowing entity who knows without a doubt that her victims actually did the crimes they're accused of. Again, Mary would've leveled UVA if she listened to Jackie.
Aaaaaand more vigilantism. I honest to god hope Mary murders someone who is definitively innocent if only because it prevents the comic from condoning her actions.
So we're getting some long-winded spiel about "no glory save honor" which I think might be a metaphor for the working class? I don't know. It makes no sense.
Fuck this issue's long. "I don't see why making an AI would be a bad idea, humans do terrible things all the time." YOU FUCKING IDIOT. If you learned anything about automation, it's that whatever they can do, they can do it tirelessly and infinitely. That should be reason enough on why it would be worse for one of them to start a war or build a doomsday weapon.
Ah, now the slasher's killed a guy who hasn't actually raped anyone but might have. So we doing precrime now? Are we going to execute babies right out of the womb for crimes they might commit? And everyone seems to be okay with this slasher. If this comic tries to pull some rape culture bullshit, this is basically going to contradict it.
AAAAAAHHHHH THEY USE THE 1 IN 4 MYTH WE'VE REACHED FULL SOCJUS NOW BOI Also the completely unfounded 2% of rapists go to jail myth to boot. Lady, if we knew those men were definitively rapists they would have been put to jail. But innocent until proven guilty is such a crock, am I right? Oh yeah, and rape culture is mentioned by name.
For once douchey white superhero is right! The killer IS targeting accused rapists who were on the news. But I get the feeling he's being set up into an MRA Redpiller whose sole purpose is to be murdered, and it will be treated as a good thing.
"Pro-police and military, anti-government" what the fucking fuck this is not a real political position. NOBODY CAN BE THIS STUPID. Is douchey white superhero supposed to be like a straw libertarian or something? Aaaaaand now he's being targeted by the slasher for some reason. I don't recall him raping anyone. Was there ever even a hint of it? I guess slasher girl's just killing anyone who's being douchey now.
So apparently, because SFP is invincible, she doesn't know "what it's like to be a real woman." ...you know what, extreme patronization aside, I'm saving this the next time a radfem wants to justify making an invincible Mary Sue character. Also, douchey white superhero saves the day by being an idiot.
FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU YOU ARE A VILLAIN SLASHER GIRL. You can't prove someone is a rapist by threat of violence, and truth serum hasn't been proven to be effective! You're basically torturing people to get the answer you want, of course they're going to admit guilt! You're the fucking Spanish Inquisition! "The world was ready to hate them for expecting justice" BITCH PLEASE. Nobody loves injustice. Nobody hates the victim. But here's the crucial dilemma that you and so many people crying "rape culture" don't seem to get: Until proven in the court of law, we don't know if the accused or the accuser is the victim. If Mayella Ewell came to you and said she was raped by Tom Robinson, would you take her at her word and slit his throat? FUCK YOU YOU'RE THE REASON THAT WE'RE GOING TO LOSE DUE PROCESS IN THIS COUNTRY. And icing on the cake, she straight up admits that she doesn't care if she takes innocent lives. SO WHAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF THAT. She's literally trying to rule by fear.
Sorry for the rant. This is something I'm pretty passionate about, as you can tell.
Ah, the apologia. "So what if there's already violence in the world? Whats a few more stacked bodies to feed into a national hysteria?" This is worse than wide-eyed idealism. It's fucking solipsistic demagogery. Jesus Christ.
Okay, we're finally getting somewhere halfway decent. SFP makes the big breakthrough that trying to save the world alone is a really bad idea. Especially since nobody has all the answers. Good. (I would point out that this is exactly why nobody should be judge jury and executioner, but I'm sure the point would be lost on this comic). So this superhero hotline could be a good idea... but I could see it backfiring tremendously if all it takes for a super to rough someone up is just point a finger (again, a point that would be lost on the comic)
Okay we're finally fucking done with issue 5 ONTO ISSUE 6
So. beginning is a whole lotta nothing. I don't mean its inconsequential per se, I'm just not interested. SFP saves guy from a fire. SFP gets his number. She meets with Hector etc etc.
And then we finally get to professor asshole. You already know my thoughts on the matter.
OK. That was a slog, but not impossible. Let me know if you guys think that's good enough material for a review. If so I'll get to work on a draft then.
